Dried Flowers: The New Permanence

The misconception about dried flowers is that they are a consolation prize — what you settle for when fresh is not available. The truth is quite the opposite. A well-designed dried arrangement carries a sculptural quality that fresh flowers, with all their softness, cannot achieve.
Pampas grass remains the poster child of the dried movement, but it is only the beginning. Preserved roses retain their velvet texture for years. Bunny tails add a playful, tactile element. Lunaria — also known as silver dollar plant — brings an iridescent, almost metallic quality to arrangements.
For home styling, dried florals work beautifully in minimal, modern interiors where their organic forms contrast with clean lines. A single tall pampas stem in a narrow black vase is more impactful than a dozen fresh roses in a busy room.
To preserve your own garden flowers, hang them upside down in a dark, dry place for two to three weeks. Delicate blooms like hydrangeas dry best in a vase with a small amount of water that slowly evaporates.
